Music and Drama

  • More than 120 opera productions
  • Three world premières
  • More than 30 CD booklets

My thoroughly musical education makes me exceptionally qualified to work as a translator and writer in the world of classical music. I have played the piano since the age of six, attended a choir school for five years, where I was taught piano and organ by Roger Judd, and also learned the cello, playing in two school orchestras throughout my education. My piano training continued under Ronald Smith, and later in Zurich under Zsuszanna Sirokay. My first visit to the opera at the age of nine – for a performance of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier – kindled my passion for this art form.

I have worked for Zurich Opera House since 1998, when I collaborated on publications for the newly inaugurated Zurich Festival. Marketing texts, synopses and the Opera House’s annual Season Book followed. Since 2009, I have been responsible for the English surtitles of all Zurich Opera House productions, and have now translated more than 120 libretti, including three world premières – notably of Heinz Holliger and Händl Klaus’s Lunea.

I also work for the Salzburg Festival, translating highly demanding pieces such as Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier and Die Liebe der Danae as well as texts for the Salzburg Whitsun Festival under the artistic direction of Cecilia Bartoli. Besides my work for Zurich Opera House, my sur-/subtitles have been seen in Salzburg, at the Semperoper Dresden and the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, as well as on Austrian television channel ORF and the Salzburg Festival’s 2015 DVD of Beethoven’s Fidelio.

I have worked for the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich since 2003, translating website texts and more than 30 CD booklets for works ranging from Mahler’s ten symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Christian Tetzlaff, from extracts of Wagner operas to the Schubert symphonies and Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps. For the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, I translated a Chinese opera – The Peach Blossom Fan – from English into German, and have also adapted CD liner notes for the Musikkollegium Winterthur and Swiss harpsichordist Vital Julian Frey.

Translations of synopses, artist biographies, media releases and press reviews for all these institutions as well as the Schauspielhaus Zürich complete my range of services in this field.
